Waterfalls and Trails in Marion County
A 60-foot waterfall with a swimming hole, a 12.5-mile gorge trail and a river overlook you can reach in a few minutes' walk. Then a cabin or campsite near the trailhead.
Foster Falls
Foster Falls drops 60 feet into a wide pool in Fiery Gizzard State Park, near Sequatchie, about 10 minutes from Jasper and 45 minutes from Chattanooga. An overlook sits a short walk from the parking area. The trail to the base takes most people about fifteen minutes on rocky steps and roots, and people swim in the pool all summer. There is no lifeguard.
Snooper’s Rock
A wide rock ledge above the horseshoe bend of the Tennessee River Gorge, in Prentice Cooper State Forest. It is about 30 minutes from Jasper or Whitwell and 30 to 40 minutes from Chattanooga. Park, walk a few minutes, and the river is below you. The last stretch of road is gravel, and the forest closes to non-hunters on scheduled hunt weekends.
The Fiery Gizzard Trail
The trail runs 12.5 miles from Foster Falls north to Grundy Forest through boulder fields, creek crossings and the Raven Point overlook. Most hikers need 8 to 10 hours end to end. For a shorter day, walk a mile or two north from Foster Falls and turn around.
