If you don’t have time to hike the entire Fiery Gizzard Trail, the Day Loop Trail to Sycamore Falls is a great alternative option.

Camping Options

Suppose you want to experience more than a day trip to Fiery Gizzard Trail. In that case,  you can pick from rustic backcountry campsites with easy trail access or more established camping options with South Cumberland State Park facilities. The Father Adamz backcountry campground accommodates up to 30 hikers on the group site, so you can grab your friends and enjoy this epic trail together. Or you can hike 2.5 miles from Foster  Falls and access Small Wilds Campground, with 6 sites, an outhouse, and a fire ring at each site. The Foster Falls Campground is the only park camping area where guests can park a car or small pop-ups next to the campsite, and it has a restroom with heated showers. 

Ravens Point

Regardless of where you start your hike or if you stay overnight, a visit to Fiery Gizzard Trail is not complete without a stop at Ravens Point. After trekking up steep climbs and rocky paths, you will enjoy the unforgettable reward of panoramic scenic views of the park that are exceptionally striking if you choose to visit in the fall. Hikers can also shorten the hike by just under 3 miles by hiking to Ravens Point and back out. This captivating spot offers the most expansive view of the hike, so be sure to ask a fellow hiker to snap a photo. Also,  feel free to pack a hammock, as many hikers enjoy their snacks in style and comfort while hanging from nearby trees. There’s plenty of space at the overlook.

Yes, dogs on a leash are allowed on the trail, but it is not recommended due to the rocky  conditions. 

The trail is rated strenuous, which means different things to different hikers. The paths are  rocky and root-covered, and the inclines are steep. Sturdy hiking shoes with ankle support  are recommended. Leave the trekking poles at home, as you'll need to use nearby trees to  steady yourself as you climb. This is not a beginner trail, but it is worth the effort. Some locals recommend packing duct tape in case your shoes aren't up to the challenge of the  terrain.

It is 12.5 miles one-way, but the hike has clearly marked turnaround points. The trail will  take an entire day to hike. If you have two vehicles, you can park one at each end, so you do  not have to hike back. There are also rideshare options.

Parking is available at the Foster Falls and Grundy Forest trailheads. Grundy Forest behind  Tracy Elementary School is a popular starting point for hikers visiting Ravens Point. Foster  Falls offers easy access for hikers interested in a shorter, less strenuous section of Fiery  Gizzard Trail. 

Recommended gear includes sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support, more water  than you think you'll need, food and a trail map that does not rely on cell service. Cellular  service is limited, and GPS may not work. Additional layers of clothing for possible weather  changes and navigation tools are also suggested. It is easy to get lost. Consider packing a  small first aid kit for scrapes and blisters and a snake bite kit, as there are venomous  snakes in the area. 

Seasonally, fall and spring are the best times of the year to visit Fiery Gizzard Trail, with  fewer bugs, cooler temperatures, and vibrant, colorful views. 

You need a permit for backcountry camping, and fires are only allowed in fire rings.

More Information

The South Cumberland State Park Information & Welcome Center is 50 miles northwest of  Chattanooga and 85 miles southeast of Nashville, between Tracy City and Monteagle. Take  Interstate 24 to Exit 134 (US Highway 41) and follow Hwy 41 for about 3.5 miles to the  Information & Welcome Center on your left. The Center is open daily from 8 am until 4 pm;  closed Mondays. You can reach the information desk at the Center during regular business hours at 931-924-2980.
