Weekend Getaways: Outdoor Adventures in Marion County, Tennessee

Tucked in the corner of Southeast Tennessee, Marion County is one of those places you can easily overlook until you’re standing in the middle of it, wondering why you didn’t come sooner. Just outside of Chattanooga, it’s got everything you’d want for a weekend outdoors, trails, lakes, caves, rivers, and the kind of scenery that stays with you long after the drive home.
Here’s the perfect itinerary for two days in Marion County if you’re searching for fresh air, good views, and just enough adventure to sleep well at night.
Hike to a View at Snooper’s Rock
Snooper’s Rock is probably one of the most iconic spots in the region, and yes, it really does live up to the hype. The hike itself is not hard, especially if you park close to the overlook. It winds through the forest and eventually opens up to a panoramic view of the Tennessee River Gorge. Think wide bends, captivating hills, and that quiet hush that only comes with being up high.
- Pro Tip: Get there early. The lighting just after sunrise is incredible, and you’ll likely have the place to yourself if you beat the late-morning crowd.

Spend a Day at Foster Falls
Foster Falls is one of those places that works for both serious hikers and folks just looking for a beautiful picnic spot. The 60-foot waterfall is an easy walk from the parking lot, but if you want to explore more, the Climber’s Loop trail takes you around the gorge for some great views and access to the base of the falls. It’s rocky in parts, so wear good shoes.
- Pro Tip: In warmer weather, bring a swimsuit. There’s a deep pool at the bottom that’s popular for swimming. And if you’re into climbing, the rock faces here are well-known for being some of the best in the state.

Kayak at Nickajack Lake
If you’re more into water than trails, Nickajack Lake is the spot. You can launch a kayak from several points, including Marion County Park or Shellmound, and paddle along the shoreline or out toward Nickajack Cave. In the evening, you might even catch the gray bats emerging in a swirl above the cave entrance.
- Pro Tip: Pack a snack and find a quiet cove to float. Some of the best moments on the water are the quietest.

End the Day at Hales Bar Marina
After a day of hiking or paddling, Hales Bar Marina is the perfect place to unwind. You can stay in one of the floating cabins, which sit right on the river, or just stop by to catch the sunset from the dock. There’s something peaceful about the way the light hits the water out there.

There’s more to Marion County than just these spots, but if you’ve only got a weekend, this is a great place to start for a weekend full of fun and relaxation.
